Humba |

| |
The foundation of the Humba Efau
and the release of the Humba-CDs brought a whole new international
flair to the Carnival in Cologne. With songs swinging between the
"Veedel" (= quarter, community or neighbourhood) and the
cultures of the world, the albums relative local patriotism by mixing
it with open-mindedness and adds new spice to the old tradition of
Carnival. "Humba" reflects the fantasy, irony and bonhomie
of native and learned Colognians, whose self-assigned mission is to
infiltrate the Carnival in Cologne and free it from laming misinterpretation
of tradition and growing commercialisation. .
In the songs, the musicians present a fascinating mixture of enjoyment
and hedonist masquerade. The true face of Cologne emerges: it is not
only "kölsch" ("colognish") anymore - it
also is Arabic, African, Spanish and Portugese. Cologne is Sevillana,
Gipsy-Rap, Bowling-Club-Waltz, Reggae-Scratcher, Triphop-Ballad, Backstreet-Samba,
a song about the ghost-alike alternative Carnival-parade ("Jeisterzochlied")
and somehow also a little bit of Chinese Feeling on the banks of the
river Rhine.
